Beekeeping

Bees are fascinating little creatures and I’ve learned a lot of interesting information over the five years that we’ve been keeping bees. One thing that we’ve learned through hard experience, bee colonies can seem pretty healthy and then die off suddenly.  I’ve read a lot and talked with local beekeepers enough to know that most of these die offs are the fault of the beekeeper, me.  As I’ve heard local beekeeper and international expert Randy Oliver say, it’s PPBK syndrome.  Piss poor beekeeping.  Luckily there are numerous sources available with the proper methods needed to fight back this scourge.  Here are some pictures of capturing a swarm and re-hiving it.

Bees swarm to look for a new home, this is how we give them one.

After shaking the bees into a box, a sheet is placed spread in front of an empty hive.

The bees are dumped on the sheet.  After a bit they explore the new hive and move it.
